The Vault of Horror (1973)

🚫 Reviewed 07 May 2026

Commits the grievous error of adapting lurid grime into largely rote, suburban-kitchen-coloured, plodding naturalism with just a few streaks of camp.

Midnight Mess is tepid until well after the murder; The Neat Job is just dire; This Trick'll Kill You is actually a neat critique of the intersection of entertainment and colonialism, with some loose ends (guh-huh) that give it a bit of lasting interest; Bargain in Death absolutely doesn't sell me on the main character's terror but has some stupid jokes, so there's that; and Drawn and Quartered is actually pretty sick (in spite of the cartoonish racism angle).

All in all it almost feels like a psyop to make “posh British jerks karmically eating dirt” feel like a boring proposition.
