Messiah of Evil (1974)

It's almost too easy to read political critique into a film where a demagogue turns small-town/suburban USAmerica into rotting cannibals who murder outsiders or just anyone deemed lesser. Anyway, so many night-time shots in this film feel like they're made of just two colours like the old two-tone technicolour horror films like Doctor X. It's beautifully stylised and only adds to the uncanny dream aura, where scenes and motives come and go like flotsam. Everyone's unable to stay or go, putting in the barest effort, waiting for the truth to come to them, and it does… and the finale is nightmarish in an almost too-real way.
