Adolescence of Utena (1999)

God the fucking architecture in this film is astounding, from the grandiose, Piranesian school-prison to the ornamental touches like the rose garden portcullis to the nightmare highway castle. Ikuhara and co. show, once again, that you can just cut out the dead grey heart of perfunctory realism and set it aflame on the ziggurat of art. This film crew must've had rep from every clade of the pervert evolutionary tree and it's so brilliant for it. A perfect little fable of the uncharted, self-made road to gender anarchy. Side note: A shocking amount of REDLINE ancestry in that ending, kinda feels like Koike must have seen this film…
