Fargo season 1 (2014)
A densely interwoven thriller that stays tense and unpredictable down to the wire. Malvo is a delightful mix of grand and petty due to his almost unhuman malice; Molly and Gus' intertwined growth is bitter, bitterly funny, and heartwarming; and Lester's epoch-slow transformation is dark magic. The moment-to-moment writing is fantastic. Characters regularly tell stories, teach parables, use analogies and metaphors, deploy thought experiments, and otherwise switch idioms in a way that's exactly my shit. Beyond the story and characters, I love the folk/fairytale melancholy strings on the soundtrack and the mythic allegory they breathe into the show. They took the sensibility of the original film, made it their own, and built the archetype for the Fargo seasons to come.
