Lupin III: Blood Seal of the Eternal Mermaid (2011)

This starts by piling on misdirections and betrayals, but evolves into a typical and mundane tale. The main villain slowly turns into a cheap megalomaniac, Goemon's drama is contrived, Lupin's ulterior motive is sidelined for too long (an echo of Walther P38). The visuals are pseudo-Ghibli and technically fine, but often lack life and motion. Some of the closing dialogue feels like the team saying “we wanted to get weirder, but we couldn't”. It's just not spectacular enough. Side note: I was expecting the final act to have a whole gauntlet of deadly traps like The Fuma Conspiracy, but there's only one… sad.
