Lupin III: Missed by a Dollar (2000)

In which Lupin takes on the juggernaut of hegemonic international finance. The fact that the gang “die” in the first act and need to keep a low profile for a while paves the way for a more subtle second act rather than the usual adventure–caper antics. It all comes to a head in two stylish climax scenes: a battle at a burning warehouse followed by a melancholic bar-room showdown. The local characters and the way the writers misuse some of the regulars (e.g. Zenigata) may not be perfect, but the pacing and mood here is on point.
