Lupin III: The Fuma Conspiracy (1987)

Kinda Cagliostro-but-in-Japan, except the first and second acts are shrunk to grotesque proportions and the writers are very nonchalant about a relationship between a teen girl and an adult man, even if it is chivalrously chaste. On the bright side, the animation and backgrounds are spectacular and the character work has many little details and big expressions. The car chases in reach the “living machine” heights of the later Miyazaki/Takahata Lupin works! Unfortunately, it's so short the villains don't have time to shine, and the nameless Fuma boss' presence stems from his crime-Buddha style rather than real personality. At least Zenigata's very much himself.
