Lupin III: The Mystery of Mamo (1978)

What starts along the lines of one of the weirder early Lupin capers quickly slips down a stylish and nightmarish cascade of delirious revelations, all while staying true to the gang's character. I think this probably wouldn't hit quite as good unless you've seen Part I, because so much here fleshes out its romantic dreamscape inhabited by playful-yet-serious globe-trotting master criminals perpetually trapped between twilights. Anything can happen, and it'll look strange and beautiful. More seriously, the film is an annihilation of Great Men and repudiation of the butterfly-collector's approach to history and society.
