Lupin III: Tokyo Crisis (1998)

A Lupin TV special that's actually good? Now I've seen it all. A genuinely fun outing, in part because it focuses on Zenigata and avoids the classic pitfall of making him a clown. His relationship with local character Maria is cute, faint delusions of romance aside. Goemon and Jigen have some fun troubles and get their groove back in satisfying style, including a great zantetsuken cut (30 straight seconds on buildup and payoff). On the downside, some plot points don't really pan out and Fujiko's especially “girlishly incompetent”, among other 90s anime sexism momence. Still, Maria's great and we get a rare insight into Zenigata's life outside Lupin.
