Feels like the director was going for naturalism through improv and discovered why you don't do naturalist drama through improv and then took it out on his crew so the whole thing just got progressively worse and worse. Also the last third or so is mostly just flashbacks to the first half interspersed with Willem Defoe contemplating a computer chip and wanking. No, the flashbacks don't help the baffling improv make more sense.
