Quiet Country Cafe (2002)
It's hard not to compare this to the first Yokohama Shopping Log OVA. The animation's rougher, but more consistent and playful. The watercolours are great—I dunno if it's intentional, but they give a feeling of “nature seen by artificial eyes”, a simulacrum seeing the world as a simulacrum. Sound-wise, there's less of the first OVA's fun blend of bossa nova and city pop, more generic string ensemble work. The biggest difference is the material: This one adapts the manga's most purposeful arc, while the first shows what it's like to be Alpha through everyday life. Overall, this feels more “produced” as an accompaniment to the manga, while the first stands on its own, if not with the manga's depth. Either way, if you like it, read the manga.
