Wake in Fright (1971)

A sinister and deeply uncomfortable vision of one man's self-inflicted personal hell. The men drink beer and sweat it back out and then rut (heterosexually (mostly)) and kill for no reason. The women cool off with water and want to fuck off outta town. Hospitality is demonic, life is death, up is down. There's about 10 million times more brutally violent kangaroo hunting than you might expect from the “Controversy” section on Wikipedia. The pacing feels aimless and amorphous, but this is a film about getting drenched in the awful atmosphere of being stuck somewhere you hate, with people you hate, so it makes sense to just sort of let it overwhelm you.
