It's 2010 and while flicking through a Flash game site and all its offerings—Booger Launcher 5, Zombie Zoo Tower Defense 3, Gun Jump: The Final Gun (part 2 of a sadly unfinished trilogy; one of the best Flash games of all time)—you see there, stark against the black earth, a white needle rising into the sky, and below, reduced to a speck by this giant monument (natural? artifice?), the shape of a human being.

Looming

is one of the most memorable and unique Flash games for me. An early walking sim—before Dear Esther and Gone Home. Oblique archaeological storytelling inspired by Myst and Yume Nikki (tip: look for artefacts near paths, machines, and monuments). Moody, monochrome, dither-heavy visuals and an ethereal soundscape of custom foley. Dark but not dark. Lonely but not lonely. Sere but not sere.
