finished the main campaign on “Bad” difficulty, plus the Civil War bonus missions

What if we made an entire game out of the hardest parts of Blood—combat encounters with groups of brutal hitscanners—and then made it even harder by giving you limited healing, almost no armour, and one of the worst thrown explosives known to man?

Outlaws is at its best when you're running, jumping, and skulking through outposts, forts, and frontier towns—non-linear complexes where you need to stay sharp and clear the place building by building while keeping an eye out for attackers in the distance. It's at its worst when it forces you to engage with its shallow and horribly-implemented special mechanics, like the extensive water switch puzzle in the saw mill or basically any time you need to fight in the dark.

I guess I should mention the story. It's kinda revolutionary for an FPS at the time (actual characters? villains with personalities? realistic motives?), but it's pretty much a Western-themed madlibs and the individual levels feel totally arbitrary. The animated cutscenes are a nice touch, though, even if a lotta them feel very rushed (lots of full-face close-ups of dying villains).
